Research Experience:

Prof Richard Yang joined the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics in January 2012 as Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Smart Structures and he was promoted as Professor in 2018. Prior to this, Richard was holding the position of Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering, the School of Engineering, Deakin University (Deakin). Prior to his almost six-year working in Deakin University, he also has worked for a couple of years each in the University of Sydney (USyd) and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) as post-doc research fellow after he finished his PhD in Mechanical Engineering in the University of Hong Kong (HKU) in 2002. He was awarded the Graduate Certificate for Higher Education by Deakin University in 2008.


In research, he has been mainly working in engineering analysis and computational mechanics about 20 years with focusing on characterisation and evaluation of material properties and mechanical behaviours via numerical modelling and simulations as well as experimental analyses. He has been awarded 1 ARC DP grant in composites, 2 ARC Linkage grants in roll forming of metal sheets, and 4 ARC LIEF grants as well as three competitive overseas research grants, including 1 Beijing Natural Science Foundation Grant (BNSF) on roll forming and 3 National Natural Science Foundation of China Grants (NFSC) on advanced engineering materials from China. In scientific publication, he has published more than 200 journal/conference papers and confidential reports for industrial partners in his main fields of research - Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Civil Engineering, etc.


As for external service, he is serving as assessor for ARC, editor board member, conference committee member, reviewers of international journals and conferences, and examiner for Master and PhD thesis, etc.
